'LOB's "Early Days"

WLOB AM celebrated it's roots on February 3, 2007. WLOB AM's 50th. On February 2nd, 1957 WLOB 1310 came in Portland as the city's first all music and news station. Listeners were waiting for it because within 3 months the station became the most listened to in Greater Portland. We had the pleasure of doing a 2 hour salute with the owner who helped build WLOB, Mel Stone. He built stations all over Maine in the 50's and in the mid 60's put on Bangor's Channel 7 TV. Also the guy who did a lot of "Heavy Lifting" during the building process was program director/DJ Howie Leonard. He played the top tunes of the day weedays from 2-6pm. Doing the morning show was Seth Larrabee. And mid-days were done by Dick Johnson and Dex Card.

On March 10th WLOB saluted itself one more time. The station was sold in 1965 and that means a lineup of all new swingin' DJ's. We also did a 2 hour salute to channel 1310 with the "Boy Next Door", Bob Fuller, the World Famous Jim Sands, and Surfer Joe. Great music memories were played from the mid 60's and early 70's like the Beatles, Oh Yeah Yeah! Other DJ's who appeared on WLOB in the 60's and early 70's included Johnny Dollar, Jon E. Dee, Dick Donovan, Allen E Allen, Dick Broderson, Charley Brown, Bob Anderson, Jeff Henderson, Wally Brine, Bob Dow, Chris Randall, Bobby Ocean, Phil Lewis, Walter Thomas, Don White, Joe Martelle, George Ryan, Dick Havrinen, The Magic Christian, Rick and Mary-Jo Snyder and Bud Sawyer, of course! Thanks to them the station was the number one music station in southern Maine.
